Fire Sprinklers-The Good and The Bad

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Office with water coming out of the fire sprinklers Commercial Fire Sprinklers Water Damage

Fire Sprinklers are of great importance in any commercial facility because of the many factors which is Good. Regardless of the style you install, all fire sprinklers share several important characteristics. Fire sprinklers respond to heat, not smoke, to reduce accidental activation in non-fire situations. Each sprinkler head activates independently to reduce water damage. In fact, in two-thirds of fires where the sprinkler system operates, only one or two sprinkler heads open. The sprinkler system releases much less water than the fire department would use to douse the flames, again reducing water damage. The Bad of course IS the damage that water can do to porous material especially over time. That's why SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County knows the importance of fast and effective water damage mitigation.

Know the 3 Categories of Water Damage

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

A photo showing the 3 categories of water damage The 3 Categories of Water Damage

SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County wants you to know what the 3 categories of water damage are:

Category 1 water damage refers to water damage that has been caused by water that came from a sanitary source—floods caused by broken water supply lines, a toilet tank, a faucet, or a failed water heater, for example, would fall into this category.

Category 2 water damage includes water that is contaminated in some way, and could cause health effects if ingested. Grey water can come from instances like a washing machine overflow, a toilet overflow with urine, or a dishwasher overflow. In these cases, the water likely contains unsafe levels of microorganisms and/or a hospitable environment for the growth of microorganisms.

The highest level of water damage, Category 3 refers to damage caused by grossly unsanitary water. Black water contains human and/or animal waste, along with other contaminants that could cause severe health effects if ingested. Sources of Category 3 water damage can include sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams, wind driven rain, water from beyond the toilet trap, and standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Streets over flooded with rain water Heavy Rains =Flooded Florida Streets

This year 2021 has seen a tremendous amount of rainfall in Florida. In less than 5 minutes 1/2 inch of rain fell in and round Ocala, Marion County Florida. Breaking a record just in the month of February alone. SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County continues to receive calls from residential and commercial customers because of flooding, and heavy rain intrusion. Also the large amount of humidity is taking its toll in way of mold growth inside and outside of buildings. A few quicks tips on keeping all this rain water away from and outside of your homes and facilities is to make sure you have gutter systems on the buildings to deviate the water away from the structure and make sure they are are never clogged. Also stucco siding can crack over time and needs to be sealed and repainted to keep moisture from seeping in.

HVAC Leaks Can Cause Water Damage

8/18/2021 (Permalink)

Water Stains Around a Ceiling Air Vent Fail to maintain your HVAC system and it can cause water damage

Tips: How to prevent water damage caused by your HVAC system.

Change the Filter

Changing the filter will help prevent the system from overworking, which can lead to the freezing of the coils.

Keep it Clean

Your air conditioner needs proper airflow to work effectively, so cleaning accumulated dirt on the exterior of the unit, or condenser, needs to be done at least once a year. Also make sure the condenser isn’t covered with anything or objects aren’t placed to close, to keep the airflow free-flowing

Maintaining the Drain Line

You will want to check that the water in your HVAC system is flowing freely to the drain. While the system is running, check that the condensation line is open and, if it’s not, make sure to clean the drainage holes.

Install a Pump

By installing a condensation pump to your HVAC system, you will help excess water to flow into the proper disposal drain. Along with a pump, you can install a safety float which will automatically shut down the power to the system if condensation does start to build up. Doing this will ensure there is no risk of overflow

Call in the Professionals

If you notice stains on your ceiling or if your air vents have condensation or if they look dirty, Call SERVPRO of Ocala today for an inspection. 352-732-6630

What Can Happen After The Fire Is Put Out?

8/18/2021 (Permalink)

Bathroom filled with smoke and black soot everywhere The after effects of a fire and what to expect.

The after effects of a fire once it is put out and what to expect:

SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County professionals are trained and experienced in knowing what to expect after a fire is pout out and what kind of damage it causes. We have 47 years of on the job cleaning to know how to rid the following damages after the fire is out.

  1. Soot: Is the carbon byproduct of burnt materials, and it can be acidic and cause a lot of damage to porous and textured surfaces. Stone, grout, wood, carpet, and textiles are particularly vulnerable.
  2. Mold: Thrives in damp, dark places, which is often the case in properties after a fire. Once the moisture in the air interacts with mold spores, it produces mildew which is damaging to porous surfaces.
  3. Rust: Will corrode your metal objects causing some items to become irreparable, or increasing your risk of electric shock in electrical items.
  4. Odor: After a fire is overwhelming – the mixture of smoke and mildew creates a particularly putrid smell.

Is Your Roof Damaged By Storm Driven Winds?

8/18/2021 (Permalink)

Shingles blown away and miss off a roof Missing Roof Shingles are a sure way of knowing you have storm damage from high winds

Entire Shingles Missing from the Roof
One of the easiest ways to tell that you have a wind damaged roof is the loss of entire shingles. If you find shingles in your yard or around your house, you’ll definitely want to have a professional come out and look at what else could cause you trouble.

Cracks or Tears in a Flat, Rubber Roof
If you have a flat roof, look for missing pieces or tears in the material. Wind can lift up the material and rip it away or leave it with bubbles which hurts the integrity of the covering.

Damaged Soffit or Fascia
Like shingles, soffits and fascia keep water away from the roof, reducing the chances of getting a leak. When damaged, soffit and fascia can open your home up to water damage and stray critters snaking in. Wind can cause cracks, loose or bent areas or even blow off loose fascia entirely.

Chimneys
Is your chimney looking a little crooked? This should tip you off to a problem. Sometimes there is missing spots of lashing, which breaks the sealing around the chimney and lets in water.

Kitchen Fire and Protein Smell

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of a steak burning in an iron skillet on the stove Protein Fire and Smoke from burning foods will cause hard to remove odors.

One of the hardest and most offence smells is that of meat that is burning in your kitchen. A protein fire results from burning any protein rich fibers, such as those you find in most meat, or eggs. What’s so remarkable about protein fires is that they don’t actually look like fires.  They don’t have large flames and they don’t produce visible smoke. This is a result of the slow-cooking process used to cook protein rich foods.  The animal fat in protein burns down to a fine, nearly invisible mist. While you can’t see it, the mist will coat everything in a sticky, rancid residue.  It gets everywhere, coating your stovetop, clothes, carpets, tiles, and penetrating the paint on your walls.  Any porous surface soaks it up. Call SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County today to help rid your home of this fowl odor. 352-732-6630

Avoid Water Damage-Learn How To Turn Off Your Water

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

close up photo of a main water turn off valve Do You Know How To Turn Off Your Main Water Line?

Do you know how to shut off the water valve to avoid water damage in your home or business? If you’ve never checked out your water valve before, you are at risk of water damage should you ever have a plumbing emergency. You’ll need to shut off the water to the entire house if:

  • There is no local shut off valve by the area or appliance in question
  • You need to shut off the water to the entire house whenever you leave for an extended period of time.
  • Your washing machine breaks and is overflowing with water
  • Your water heater breaks down and is leaking or overflowing with water
  • A pipe breaks and is leaking water

That’s why you’ll need to learn how to shut off the main water valve and will want to make sure all teenagers (who might be home alone) know how to turn it off as well.

SERVPRO of Ocala uses Electrostatic Fog for COVID Cleaning

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO professional using an Electrostatic Fogger SERVPRO Professional using an Electrostatic Fogger

SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County has been using Electrostatic foggers for excellent surface cleaning. Electrostatic is the process of spraying an electrostatically charged mist onto surfaces and objects. Electrostatic spray uses a specialized solution that is combined with air and atomized by an electrode inside the sprayer. Subsequently, the spray contains positively charged particles that are able to aggressively adhere to surfaces and objects. Because the particles in the spray are positively charged, they cling to and coat any surface they’re aimed at.

For awkwardly shaped objects or hard to reach places, cleaning staff only have to point and spray; the nature of the mist allows it to coat surfaces evenly, and envelope objects—even if the mist is only sprayed from one side. After the spray is applied, the sanitizing agent works to disinfect the covered surfaces. For this reason, electrostatic spray is an excellent solution for germ and contaminant ridden areas.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers Used On Large Commercial Water Damages

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

Large Green SERVPRO Desiccant Dehumidifier on a Trailer SERVPRO Desiccant Dehumidifier mounted on a Trailer

SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County have used large commercial Desiccant Dehumidifiers just about every year. Desiccant dehumidifiers work by using a large desiccant wheel to adsorb moisture from the process air stream. As the process air is dried, the moisture content of the wheel rises. To remove this moisture the wheel is in constant rotation and a second air stream is heated and passed through the wheel. This heated air steam picks up the moisture from the wheel, in turn drying the wheel so it is reactivated and able to continue to dry the process air. Desiccant dehumidifiers are one of two main types of dehumidifiers. The other common type is a condensing dehumidifier. These are often used for pools or damp basements. Desiccant dehumidifier excel in dryer environments compared to condensing dehumidifiers, and are essential for low dew point applications.

Florida Lighting Capital of The U.S. in Ocala, FL.

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of lighting at night Florida Is Known For Lighting Strikes Which Causes Fire Damages

Here in Central Florida, SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County has responded to its share of fire damages caused by lighting strikes. Storms rumble in and out of our area all the time year after year. Beside the high winds and flooding rains, lighting strikes during storms are a large cause of fire damage. Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the atmosphere between clouds, the air, or the ground. In the early stages of development, air acts as an insulator between the positive and negative charges in the cloud and between the cloud and the ground. When the opposite charges build up enough, this insulating capacity of the air breaks down and there is a rapid discharge of electricity that we know as lightning. (The actual breakdown process is still poorly understood.) The air breakdown creates ions and free electrons that travel down the conducting channel. This current flow temporarily equalizes the charged regions in the atmosphere until the opposite charges build up again.

Clogged Gutters Causes Water Damage

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of leaves clogging gutters on a roof of a house Clogged Gutters Can Cause Water Damage!

Here's a very important tip from your friends at SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County: Inspect Your Gutters To Make Sure They Are Allowing Water To Flow Off and Away From Your Home.

Water damage from clogged gutters is one of the most common but least expected home maintenance issues. The status quo inside gutters is generally invisible to most homeowners. Gutter problems often aren’t evident until heavy rainfall causes conspicuous overflow. Once the gutters are no longer conveying roof runoff to the downspouts so it can be properly diverted from the home, a number of repercussions occur, and all of them are bad for the structure of your house. Exterior siding, like Stucco, isn’t made to resist a torrent of water running down its surface. Rainwater gushing from a clogged gutter often cascades down the wall, permeates the interior wall void, then leaks into living spaces.

SERVPRO of Ocala uses Thermal Imaging for Moisture Detection

7/30/2021 (Permalink)

Image of moisture looking through a thermal camera A moisture problem photo taken by using thermal imaging.

With the growing concern about mold damage and associated health problems, inspectors are becoming increasingly vigilant in checking for areas of moisture within the confines of the building envelope. Weather related damage and flooding, and subsequent mold growth, have also escalated the need for tools that can facilitate fast and accurate moisture investigations.

Moisture in a residential home

There are a number of areas where moisture can accumulate that are often overlooked in typical inspection processes, or require extensive damage to the property to find them. That is why SERVPRO of Ocala uses thermal imaging as part of their building inspection regimen.

Using infrared cameras (or thermal imagers) to detect moisture and building failures is a relatively new but rapidly growing practice in inspection and insurance circles. In the past, infrared technology has successfully been used to detect roof failures as well as in the fire and water restoration industry.

11/13/2020 (Permalink)

Just as SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County provide water, fire and mold remediation to residential structures, we also provide the same for commercial structures.

Our industry categorizes large facilities into four types: industrial, institutional, complex residential, and commercial.

General Industrial

Per the IICRC S-500, an industrial building is primarily used for manufacturing or dustribution.

Institutional

Institutional are primarily used in forms such as hospitals, schools, government buildings, sport complexes, libraries, and airports.

Complex Residential

These structures would include Townhouses, condo's, apartment complexes, hotels, multi-family homes, duplexe's, large single family homes and mansions.

Commercial

The primary use of these structures is retail, office, mixed use and warehousing.

One other type of structure would be:

Historical

This structure could fall into any of the above categories. These are buildings that are atleast 50 years old and hold some sort of historical significance.

You can be sure that before we step foot on your commercial property we are already thinking of your concerns about the restoration process and how it may affect your business and operations.

Lithium Ion Batteries

11/13/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of a garage fire caused by lithium batteries Fire caused by a battery.

There is currently limited data on fire characteristics for Lithium Ion Batteries. However, we can predict that when the battery enters Thermal Runaway, thermal runaway propagation will produce an identifiable mark. The fire may be in a state of gradual burnout or an explosion. Both types of accidents, as well as the negative byproducts (jetted shrapnel, molten metal, burning electrolytes, and other materials) can be managed by setting appropriate storage measures and transportation environments for the batteries.

Thermal Runaway

Thermal Runaway occurs in situations where an increase in temperature causes a further increase in temperature, often leading to a destructive result. It is kind of uncontrolled positive  feedback.

Lithium Ion Battery fires occur all over the world. The hazards include the ability to release toxic substances and produce volatile combustion. Lithium battery fires may not be more dangerous than conventional fires but they have their own unique risks.

  • Keep Air Flowing: Your furnace needs fresh air to operate. If your furnace doesn't get enough air it may consume oxygen from inside your home.
  • Schedule Inspections: You have to keep up to date on yearly inspections to insure your furnace is operating correctly.
  • Keep Flammable Items Away: Do not pile papers, rags or any other flammable items next to your furnace.
  • Change your Filter: Damaged or clogged filters may cause a breakdown.
  • Check Your Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarms: Replace batteries at least once a year.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has now officially discouraged Trick or Treating. America's Health Protection Agency says that many traditional Halloween activities can be high risk for spreading viruses.

High risk Halloween activities according to the CDC include the following:

  • Door to door Trick or Treating
  • Trick or Treat events with treats being handed out of trunks to large groups of people
  • Indoor costume parties
  • Indoor Haunted Houses
  • Hayrides/tractor rides with people who are not in your family
  • Going to a fall festival outside of your community

But that doesn't mean Halloween is canceled. You and your family can still participate in plenty of festive activities.

A few low risk activities are:

  • Outdoor pumpkin carving with your neighbors maintaining social distancing
  • An outdoor neighborhood Halloween themed scavenger hunt
  • Decorating your home
  • A Halloween movie night

We here at SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County wish you a Safe and Happy Halloween and are here to help if you have concerns about COVID-19 cleaning.

Are hurricanes strengthening more rapidly?

9/8/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO vehicles being readied for responding to Hurricane Laura. SERVPRO of Ocala readying their vehicles for departure to Louisiana.

Hurricane Laura blew up quickly as it approached the Louisiana coast, intensifying from a tropical storm to a hurricane in less than 24 hours. By the time it made land-fall, it was a powerful Category 4 hurricane with 150 mile-per-hour winds. Based on preliminary report from the National Hurricane Center, Laura gained 65 mile-per-hour winds in one 24 hour period.

What makes Storm Blow Up?

Just like a pastry chef needs all the ingredients to successfully make a cake, storm like Laura need favorable conditions to form and rapidly intensify.

Three dey ingredients help a hurricane intensify rapidly.

  • Warm ocean waters.
  • Ample moisture, or water content in the atmosphere, to maintain clouds.
  • Low vertical wind shear.

Large scale changes in ocean temperature like the El Nino Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, can also have an impact on hurricane activity.

As part of the SERVPRO Storm Team, SERVPRO of Ocala is ready to respond where needed to Any Size Disaster!

Lawn mower fires

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of a maintenance shed with smoke damaged steel Maintenace Shed at The Villages fire caused by a lawn mower.

The hum of lawn mowers ring through the country during the summer. Most people rarely consider the task dangerous, but the fact is lawn mowers do catch on fire. Any lawn mower electric or gas can catch fire. Several different manufacturers have recalled their mowers for defects that have caused fires.

Fuel hazards are one of the leadin causes of fires in gas powered lawn mowers. Fuel leaking onto the motor can cause a fire. Fuel vapors around a hot muffler can cause a fire.

According to Underwriters Laboratory, the exhaust of a mower is 240 degrees and the engine can heat up to 200 degrers easily igniting a fire. This could be devastating to a commercial lawn mowing company.

If you happen to have the unfortunate instance of your lawn mower catching on fire in your maintenance shed give us a call here at SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County and we will help you get it all cleaned up.

  • Stay in the kitchen, don't leave food cooking on the stove unattended.
  • Watch your clothing, Long flowing sleeves,large-fitting shirts and even aprons can catch fire.
  • Be aware of items around the stovetop, move flammable items away from your stovetop.

Picture of dinning room wood floor with water on it For a water event give us a call at 352.732.6630

You have made an significant investment in your home so why not learn some basic home maintenance. These are a few tips you can do yearly to keep that investment operating the way it should and avoid any possible water event that could damage your investment.

  • Clean your gutters, most people dont think about them as they are usually out of sight. It is recommended that you clean them twice a year.
  • Check under your sinks, look for leaks around the drain pipes.
  • Check your water lines, sinks, toilets, dishwashers, and washing machines all have water supply lines. Visually check to see if there are any leaks.
  • Water Heater, check for leaks around the valves and drain.
  • HVAC, call a professional to do a system check and look for any damage.

A failure at any one of these can result in a water event that may cause some costly damage.

How we choose Drying Methods.

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of a hallway with flooring removed Non salvageable flooring removed.

With all the advancements in drying and with new techniques and equipment, almost all materials can be dried after it has been affected due to a water event.

Our highly trained technicians take into consideration many factors when making a decision on what can and cannot be dried.

  • Contamination: This is the first thing our technicians look at. If for example a porous object or material has been exposed to a sewer back up it cannot be cleaned and must be disposed of. Safety of our clients and technicians is a priority.
  • Damage: If materials have been damaged beyond the possibility of being fully repaired after drying they are removed.
  • Cost: Our technicians will always consider the cost when determining whether an object should be dried or replaced.

Once all of these factors have been considered our highly skilled technicians can begin the restoration process.

Picture of lightning in the night sky Mother natures deadly light show.

With the recent Thunderstorms that have been rolling through, we here at SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County would like to remind everyone about Lightning Safety.

Outdoor Safety

  • If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning. Look for shelter inside a home, large building, or a hard-topped vehicle right away.
  • Do not go under trees for shelter. There is no place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder before leaving your shelter.
  • Stay away from windows and doors. Stay off porches.
  • There is no place safe outside. Places with only a roof on sports fields, golf courses, and picnic areas are not safe during a lightning storm. Small sheds should not be used.
  • If a person is struck by lightning, call 911. Get medical help right away.

Electrical Safety

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

  • Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.
  • Have Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) installed.
  • Use Ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and basements.

Tornadoes

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of a water spout near Tampa We are here for any storm damage you may incur. 352.732.6630

Being a recent transplant to this state I was well aware of the frequency of Thunder & Lightning Storms, and also Hurricanes but I never gave Tornadoes much of a thought. I recently learned that Florida has more Tornadoes per 10,000 square miles than any other state!

In Florida Tornadoes can strike any time of the year and are most common in the summertime. Summertime tornadoes tend to be very weak and are generally rated EF-0. Many of these tornadoes are waterspouts that move on shore and fall apart. The strongest Tornadoes are most likely between February-April usually within a squall line.

Here in the Ocala area we are in a moderate risk area. Not a lot of that activity happening here, but we here at SERVPRO of Ocala would like to pass on a few safety tips just in case.

  • Get In- Get in a sturdy building and put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.
  • Get Down- Get as low in the building as possible.
  • Cover Up- Flying and falling debris are a storm's number on killer. Use blankets, pillows, helmets, etc to cover up and protect yourself.

Mold on your insulation

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of a piece of Icynene foam insulation with mold on it Suspicious microbial growth on Icynene foam.

Recently here at SERVPRO of Ocala we were invited to do an inspection for suspected water damage in a tub/shower combination by a local home owner. During our visit the home owner also mentioned that he thought that he had mold in his attic on the Icynene foam insulation. Indeed on inspection of the attic we did observe a dark substance on the surface of the insulation.

The factors that can encourage mold growth on or in Foam insulation are:

1. There is moisture present in or on the insulating material.

2. There are air leaks in the spray foam insulation, air leaks through such openings may bring moisture as well as organic dust that invite mold growth.

3. There is organic material, possibly simple house dust (dominated by fabric fibers and skin cells) on the surface of the insulation.

4. There is another, more significant mold reservoir.

SERVPRO of Ocala here for all of your water, fire, or mold needs. Give us a call at 352.732.6630

Suggested guidelines to address Water Intrusion.

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of person standing in water on an exam room floor. We are ready to respond to any water intrusion.

There are several sources of water intrusion, the most common are from roof leaks, pipe breaks, sewer back ups, flooding from outside of the building. Regardless of the source water intrusions must be dealt with in an expeditious manner in order to prevent the development of potentially serious indoor environmental quality problems.

Water causing damage to a building can be assigned to categories depending on its source.

Category 1 is from a clean water source such as a sink over flow, broken water line and has the lowest health risk.

Category 2 is from a water source that has a significant degree of contamination due to its source, such as a storm drain backup, treated cooling water, and some surface water.

Category 3 is highly contaminated water from sewers, some rivers, sea water, and some surface water.

SERVPRO of Ocala's highly trained technicians are available to respond to what ever category water intrusion you may experience quickly and effectively 24/7. 352.732.6630

Picture of a SERVPRO van with a truck mounted carpet cleaning machine Call SERVPRO of Ocala at 352.732.6630

Having your carpets cleaned by a professional carpet cleaning service has many advantages. The number one advantage is it will extend the life of your carpet, dirt left in your carpet acts like sandpaper on the fibers when walked on.

Regular cleaning also Contributes to a Healtheir Environment by removing dust and allergens that get trapped in the carpet fibers which can find their way into the breathing air where they may cause respiratory problems.

Complete removal of dirt and bacteria. Whereas regular vacuuming only removes the surface dirt allowing debris that is embedded in the fibers to stay until it is professionally cleaned.

Another great advantage is professional carpet cleaning can remove some tough stains such as coffee, dirt and mud, ink, pet stains, red wine to name a few.

SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County can professionally clean your commercial carpet to enhance its overall appearance.

Don't think you are immune from a slab leak

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

Professional air movers and dehumidifier in master bathroom drying walls, floors and cabinets Master bathroom water damage dry-out due to slab leak.

As the owner of SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County I have seen thousands of water damages over our 46 years in business. From sprinkler heads popping off and flooding multi story buildings to small air conditioning leaks we have seen them all, so we think.  But it is a little different when it happens in your own home.

As a professional restoration company owner and operator we encourage and expect our employees to be sympathetic even empathetic to our customers situations.  As much as I may think I can empathize with my customers I have recently learned I have not always been understanding as I should have been.

I recently woke up early, one Ocala morning to the sound of water running but knowing everyone else was asleep in the house.  I walked toward the master bathroom when I felt that cold squish between my toes of wet carpet. After entering the master bathroom I checked all of the fixtures and shutoff's for a leak or broken supply line.  I then realized I, like so many of our Marion County customers, was the victim of a slab leak.  A slab leak is a water leak from pipes routed under a concrete slab.  When a pipe ruptures under a slab the water pressurizes the ground and will eventually follow the path of least resistance.  Unfortunately the water often follows the plumbing pipe through a protective sleeve into your home.

After the initial shock wore off I was able to gather my thoughts and shut off the water to the house, wake the family and start the water mitigation process until my SERVPRO employees, my heroes were able to take over.

If you are ever faced with a water damage in Ocala or Marion County please check out our website for Do's and Don'ts and other helpful tips on what to do during a water damage and call the company that has done it thousands of times.  Don't let a small water damage turn into a larger mold problem.  I will keep you updated on our progress as we go through the restoration process.  When we tell you we understand what you are going through believe me, we know what you are going through from both ends.

Leaking Bathtub Causes Mold-Summerfield, FL

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Photo of drain lines and mold after bathtub was removed After Effects from Leaking Bathtub Over Time

SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion Country was called out to a homeowners house to discover that the bathroom tub had been leaking underneath the flooring because the drain failed. Over time and with no notice at all, water had been making its way under the flooring and dripping out under the crawl space. Not until a musty odor which grew worse and worse did the homeowner begin to suspect the bathtub. The damage a water intrusion can cause can be very devastating and the mold that is a result can be wide spread. The only cure is to remove bathroom fixtures like this bathtub and begin to uncover the damage. Mold growing on drywall, insulation, under the flooring all needed to be safely removed and sanitized. This is what the team from SERVPRO of Ocala has been doing for decades.

Hidden Water Can Damage Your Home-Belleview, FL

SERVPRO Professional With A Moisture Meter Finds Hidden Water In Wall A Moisture Meter is One Way To Find Hidden Water In Drywall

SERVPRO of Ocala water damage professional was out on a job helping this homeowner with locating where water had been making its way into this side of the master bedroom. The homeowner noticed their ceiling discolored from stains. Discoloration isn’t the only indicator of water damage. You can check walls, floors, and ceilings for any changes in texture. Look for any warping or cracks on the floor as this can be caused by changes in the temperature and humidity level in your home. Sagging or sinking floors may be due to water that has seeped into the subflooring. This type of water damage often occurs near the shower, sink, tub, dishwasher, water heater, and washing machine. Expanding wood or laminate floors may indicate that they have absorbed too much water, causing the wood or laminate to swell up and separate.

Smoke Can Damage Your Home in Summerfield, FL.

11/6/2019 (Permalink)

Kitchen cabinets and refrigerator that appear black because of smoke from a small electrical fire in the kitchen. Kitchen turned black from smoke in Summerfield, FL.

When the refrigerator electrical cord short circuited, it cased a small fire in this kitchen. The dry wall and kitchen cabinets caught fire. The smoke from the burning material including the electrical cord caused a thick black smoke. To make matters worse, the air condition was on and caught up the smoke into the HVAC system. This caused a wide spread of the smoke. An electrical fire can be harder to clean than a small wood fire. The reason is the plastic coating of the electrical cord that is a waxy substance burned off and floating the air. This can be sticky and harder to clean. Should you suffer a fire in your home and any of your household items are covered in soot, you should not attempt to clean them yourself. It’s strongly recommended to trust them to SERVPRO of Ocala and SERVPRO of South Marion County in order to prevent further damage. Call 352-732-6630 for Emergency Response.

Commercial Clothing Store Flooded in Summerfield, FL.

Water standing on the floors of this clothing store Standing water from a busted pipe in this clothing store

SERVPRO of Ocala/SERVPRO of South Marion County responded to this small commercial shop filled with women's clothing when a toilet supply line broke flooding over half of the store. The HVAC system could not keep up with the amount of humidity from all the water and the outside temperature being so hot right in the middle of summer. The rugs on the floor plus all the handing cloths just soaked up all the moisture. The owner of the clothing store learned how important a strong cold HVAC system is in helping with dehumidification. Water not only fills the surrounding floors, rooms but the air can be saturated with high levels of humility. Drywalls can become wet and soft after so many hours exposed to this levels of moisture.

Moisture Meters: A Critical Tool in Water Damage Restoration in Belleview FL.

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

non penetrating Moisture Meter against wall showing the drywall is wet Our Trained and Skilled SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County Crew Chief Searching For Moisture Behind Drywall.

Why does SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County trained professionals use moisture meters in water damage repair at every step of every job? The answer is quite simple: moisture meters are used for moisture control to avoid mold build-up and to check moisture in floors, cabinets, walls (shown in photo) and other furnishings to avoid cracking, checking and warping. As we all know, mold can sometimes presents a health hazard. In addition, mold destroys building materials by extracting carbon-containing substances and using them as food. All organic matter can serve as a food source for mold: wood, wood-based products, plastics made from petroleum products, and building materials such as concrete and drywall. Mold grows on wet surfaces, in high relative humidity at moderate temperatures and gets its nourishment from the material on which it grows. In reality, to avoid mold, we can only control the wetness of the materials and the high humidity in the air. We will always make buildings out of concrete or wood and use other carbon-containing materials. And we will always live in comfortable, moderate temperatures. The only variables in the mold equation we can control are moisture and humidity. We usually do that by keeping buildings dry. Call SERVPRO of Ocala and South Marion County today if you think you have a moisture problem in your home or business. 352-732-6630

Emergency Ready Plan for Fire Damage, Ocala FL

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Be Ready for Fire Damage with the SERVPRO ERP App.

Recently Mike Webb, SERVPRO of Ocala marketing Manager and Consultant has been asked to visit communities and share the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan App or ERP for short. One such location was a group of high end townhomes that Mike ended up creating an ERP for each owner. The local Community Association Manager who oversees these townhomes asked Mike to do this because of fire damages to these and many other homes in and around Marion County Florida that has happened in the past years. Central Florida is known for being the lighting capital of the U.S. along with other causes of fire damages. So it seemed to be a good idea to have these homeowner's as well as commercial facilities at least aware of the ERP program. Its important to have a plan of action to evacuate the structure during a fire but also a plan to respond quickly to recovery from such a disaster. And that's where the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan can really pay off.

SERVPRO of Ocala Crews Responding to Low Rise Water Damage-Built 1931

SERVPRO of Ocala was called out early morning because of a large water damage that begin on the top floor (7th floor) and ran down all floors and even the elevator shaft. Our crews worked non stop extracting water from top to bottom of this low rise, seven floor building. Also the manpower it takes to haul up flights of stairs all the dehumidifiers, air movers, air scrubbers, trash cans for collecting water etc. because the elevator was out of service. Special drying equipment had to be placed in all areas because the building build in the 1931 and the walls are made of plaster. Wet material was taken out of the building as well as the many offices effected by the water. This means many businesses were shut down temporary while crews extracted water from all the offices in this low rise. Also the drying equipment displaced business owners and employees for a few days. Power boxes had to be used throughout this structure to supply the much needed electricity to run all the drying equipment.

SERVPRO of Ocala Storm Teams Hurricane Damage

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

Homes Close to Water Suffer Hurricane Damage

Homes like the one in the photo that are very close to the water can suffer the most water intrusion. Living close to water can be both beautiful and risky. The SERVPRO of Ocala storm team encountered a good number of home like the one pictured having sustained a good amount of water intrusion from winds driving the water into the homes that are the closest to water. While the outside of the home does not show much damage the after effects of so much water getting into the home caused a great amount of material damage. When the houses sets for days because the owner can not get back in, mold growth is what takes place. Now beside water damage mold is causing further destruction. More demolition of walls, cabinets, counter tops doors, etc. now needs to be performed to start the drying and then disinfecting of the damaged areas. SERVPRO of Ocala is proud to be part of the SERVPRO national storm teams and come to the aid of folks in times like this.

IICRC Standard Guidelines for Water Damage Categories Ocala, FL.

7/5/2019 (Permalink)

Choose SERVPRO of Ocala for IICRC Trained Professionals

According to IICRC Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration (IICRC S500), there are three categories of water that cause damage in buildings. They are summarized as follows:

Category 1 Water – That which is clean at the releasing source and does not pose a hazard if consumed by humans. Category 1 water may become progressively contaminated as it mixes with soils on or within floor coverings or building assemblies (walls, decking, and subflooring). Time and temperature, which promote the growth and amplification of microorganisms in water can cause Category 1 water to degrade. Examples: burst water pipes, failed supply lines on appliances, vertically falling rainwater.

Category 2 Water – That which begins with some degree of contamination and could cause sickness or discomfort if consumed by humans. As with Category 1 water, time and temperature can cause Category 2 water to become progressively more contaminated.

Category 3 Water – That which is highly contaminated and could cause death or serious illness if consumed by humans. Examples: sewage, rising flood water from rivers and streams, ground surface water flowing horizontally into buildings as a result of wind storm damage:

Water Damage and Drying Equipment-Ocala, FL.

7/4/2019 (Permalink)

Drying Equipment Needed For Water Damage

Sometimes it takes a lot of drying equipment to dry older buildings like the one in the photo. SERVPRO of Ocala crews are trained to use what is called a "Drying Work Book" this helps determine the number of drying equipment need to completely dry down a wet saturated structure and material. Some material like plaster takes a lot of equipment to get the structure back to normal. Also building that are "cut up" in many smaller rooms can be a challenge as well for the SERVPRO professional to make sure we don't leave any material wet. The photo shows a lot of rooms and contents as well as carpet that all had to be considered and make sure no out of the way areas were missed. SERVPRO of Ocala crews are trained to prevent mold from growing once we are finished the drying and leave the job site. Everyday the Crew Chief must monitor the drying equipment at their jobs to make sure progress is being made. Equipment is then removed from the areas that return to a normal conditions once the drying equipment has done its job. This building was no exception only that the equipment had to be moved and placed in other locations to dry all areas.

Drying, Cleaning and Sanitizing After A Hurricane in Panama City, FL.

7/2/2019 (Permalink)

Drying, Air Scrubbing and Sanitizing

After a hurricane like Michael the one Florida suffered in 2018, it takes a lot of hard work, expertise and the right equipment to get a structure back to a safe and normal living environment. SERVPRO of Ocala storm teams are experienced in restoring building that have bio hazard damage due to contaminated water intrusion. Flooding due to a hurricane brings in the water that is contaminated. The water also sets and fills into porous material that soon corrodes. Mold begins to grow and soon the indoor environment becomes unhealthy. SERVPRO of Ocala crews are trained to do as much as they can after a hurricane to get the home clean enough to start the rebuilding process. The photo shows the equipment used to keep the air in a cleaning mode while the dehumidifier is drying the structure and the disinfectant is applied. This is just one small area of the home that is seen in the photo that is being treated. Imagine how much work equipment and sanitizing efforts are needed to complete the entire square footage of this Florida home.

College Gymnasium Water Damage in Ocala, FL.

7/2/2019 (Permalink)

Large College Gym Suffers Hard Rain Damage

SERVPRO of Ocala crews were called out when this local large college gymnasium was flooded when strong winds and heavy rains covered the Marion County Florida areas. The college was having their gym commercial roof replaced. The roofers had left for the weekend and had placed plastic tarps and sand bags to cover the roof where they had not finished. No one ever thought a sudden rain storm so violent would dump tons of water so fast. Theses types of rain events are common in Florida moving fast but bring heavy rains and winds. Many other buildings in Ocala Florida were damaged that same night. Its just unfortunate that the roof of this college gym was not finished and the strong winds blew the tarps and moved the sand bags to allow much water to get inside and onto the Gym wood floors.

Older Buildings can Present Challenges Ocala, FL

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage in this older building causes mold

SERVPRO of Ocala was hired to follow protocol for mold remediation on a very old building. The walls were lath and plaster which calls for a lot of hard work removing the walls, ceilings, etc. Old electrical wiring is also a concern for the mold remediation contractor. Plumbing is another factor to be considered. This type of building calls for careful removal of the mold infested areas so as not to cause damage to other walls, wiring, plumbing etc. that are not within the scope of the protocol. The material is fragile due to the age and the SERVPRO professional is always aware of this while using a lot of energy to remove old materials. Commercial office ceiling damage

Overhead pipe break causes office water damage

When the office personnel opened their door one morning they found a mess from an over head pluming pipe that sprang a leak. The weight of the water soaked the insulation and caused the ceilings to fall in. Luckily it was not a full blown pipe break or the entire commercial facility may have been flooded. However this small leak cause the office to shut down and call SERVPRO of Ocala. Our crews arrived and began the extraction of water, cleaning up the mess, securing the ceilings with plastic and placing drying equipment. Area rugs were taken back to our SERVPRO warehouse to be cleaned, disinfected and returned. In a few days the structure was ready to be restored. The client was extremely happy about our quick, professional service.

Business Next door Shut Down by Fire-Ocala FL

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Odor Damage Can Shut Down Your Business

When a fire broke out in an office suite,  the business next door was effected as well. Fire fighters had to go into the business next door to help contain and putout the fire. The photo shows ceilings being pulled down in order for the fire fighters to make sure no fire had reached over to this suite. Smoke odor however had filled the suite. This company had to shut down due to the close proximity of the fire and the strong odor. The odor is so bad you could smell it 3 office suites away. Customers could not stand to be in the suite due to the strong odor caused by all types of burning materials.  SERVPRO of Ocala is cleaning up both locations getting them ready for new business to occupy.

Hydroxyl Generator Used to Remove Odor from Fire-Belleview, FL

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

The Hydroxyl Generator in use at an Assisted Facility Fire Damage-Belleview, FL

A large damaging fire resulted in this assisted living facility. One tool that is used by SERVPRO of Ocala to deodorize buildings is the Hydroxyl Generator.

Hydroxyl generators have proven to be effective for almost any odor. They are commonly used for treating odors caused by fire and smoke, water losses, mold and VOCs. This technology is regularly deployed on losses ranging from large big box retail and industrial fires to residential Category 2 and 3 water losses.

Unlike ozone, atmospheric hydroxyls are safe for people, animals, plants and all sensitive materials like rubber, plastic, leather, vinyl, electronics, paper and artwork. Contents can be wet while being deodorized without the risk of bleaching. Jobs can be streamlined when the contractor is able to deodorize while drying, cleaning and demoing. Both contents and structure can be treated at the same time, and as conditions permit, certain pack-out activities can be avoided or substantially reduced. In many cases, residents can stay in their home or businesses and remain open, while avoiding costly business interruption.

College Gymnasium Damaged by Storm

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Large Desiccant Dehumidifier in use by SERVPRO of Ocala

SERVPRO of Ocala responded to a large storm damage when water poured in through the roof of this college gym. This size and type of water damage called for a trailer mounted Desiccant Dehumidifier.

Desiccants are commonly used to dry dense materials (hardwood floors, plaster and lath walls, etc.) due to the large vapor pressure differentials they can create between the surface and the air. Desiccants excel at large loss drying, because they can be made in virtually any size.

Large desiccants are often self-contained dehumidification systems, utilizing onboard generators and running on propane or diesel fuel.( as shown in photo) When large catastrophic events occur, such as hurricanes, large desiccants can provide a means of dehumidification when little or no power is available.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

PPE is sometimes required to safely remediate Mold

SERVPRO of Ocala strives to make sure all our production professionals are well equipped when responding to biohazard problems like sewage and mold. Sometimes the area and amount of the hazardous material is so large and vast that PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is needed and worn. The suites, gloves, eye protection and masks are not easy to put on, so SERVPRO professionals help one another with the equipment. Making sure suits are not torn, and gloves and foot coverings can sometimes be taped for added protection are the responsibility of each person to look after the other. Its important as well that adequate Air and Water be available as the suites get very hot and stuffy. Safety is top of mind that is why many times a Safety Officer or Supervisor is there to watch out for the technicians.

Dehumidification and Air Scrubbing Needed for Successful Mold Remediation

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Ocala using Dehumidification and Air Scrubbing in this photo

What in the world is "Air Scrubbing"? We can hear you ask that question as you read the title of our blog. Simply put, Air scrubbing is one of the most effective methods for getting rid of mold. Air scrubbers draw air in from the surrounding environment, and filter it to get rid of impurities. Air scrubbers are also ideal for getting rid of the mold that settles in your walls, carpet and drapes. There are different sizes of air scrubbers that differ in intensity. When vacuuming and using air scrubbers for mold remediation, the filters used should be HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air). Only HEPA filters are designed to capture particles as small as mold spores. Regular filters will not work. SERVPRO of Ocala provides the right size of both Air Scrubbers and Dehumidifiers to insure your home or commercial facility will be free of mold, dried to industry standards and improve the indoor air quality.

Fire can Interrupt your Business

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage in a Call Center

SERVPRO of Ocala was called out to this fire which quickly caused a panic and stopped business as usual for all affected. Fire like water can cause a sizable amount of damage and interrupt any operations in a business to the degree that reopening may be days, weeks and months. Fire in particular can be a slow process of cleaning and deodorizing because of fire inspection and safety concerns. Our SERVPRO team cannot always begin emergency cleaning of metal and glass until cleared by authorities. Indoor air quality is a real concern for SERVPRO professionals as smoke and fine soot particles are carried into the HVAC systems and spread through out the facility. But, SERVPRO of Ocala has been cleaning and restoring fire damaged facilities helping businesses of all size get back to "Business as Usual"since 1974!

SERVPRO of Ocala Moisture Inspection Services

6/2/2017 (Permalink)

Photo of suspected moisture in the ceiling of this home from roof damage.

SERVPRO of Ocala is happy to help our customers find and solve problems. One service we provide is Moisture Inspection. Here  are a few tools we use to do just that.

1. Visual or using our eyeballs

Visual inspection is an integral part of every inspection we perform. SERVPRO of Ocala trained professionals have the experience and have seen the signs of water intrusion many times. While a visual survey will help identify where problems may exist, it won’t tell you if there is moisture in the walls. A probe test is still required to accurately measure moisture levels and determine if cracks or stains are symptoms of trouble lurking.

2. Protimeter or Moisture Meter

The protimeter is the only tool that accurately measures moisture content in materials. Depending on what we are assessing, we can probe from the exterior or interior through two very small holes, which we will seal up with a color matching caulk. Unless you know we were there, you won’t know we were there, but we will be able to tell you what moisture levels you have in your home. Probing also allows us to perform a damage assessment of the materials – critical in determining the need for our water drying services and in developing a scope of necessary repairs.

3. Hygrometer

We can measure with a hygrometer to determine if humidity is the culprit behind your grief. This is also the primary tool in our holster when conducting concrete slab relative humidity (RH) testing.

4. Infrared Camera (see photo)

These thermal imaging devices are, hands down, the best way to find insulation voids in walls and attic spaces that can lead to condensation and damage.

SERVPRO of Ocala is here to help. Call us today if you suspect you have a moisture problem.    (352)732-6630

One local large retreat and dive shop was almost completely shut down but our crews responded so fast with temp. walls and drying EQ that they did not have to cancel reservations nor close the restaurant.
